Biography

Gorky, Maxim [1868-1936]: Russian writer. Pen
name of Alexei Peshkov. Born in Nizhny-Novgorod (renamed Gorky, 1932
in his honour) he was exiled (1906-13) for his revolutionary
principles. His work, which include the play The Lower Depths (1902)
and the recollections My Childhood (1913), combine realism with
faith in the potential of the industrial proletariat.
